As a gorgeous morning gave way to a luscious late afternoon, the golf purists began to be outnumbered by the plaid shirts and those who had come to party all night to the music of the Florida George Line. Beer was chugged and barbecue scented the air.
Children sold lemonade on the front lawns of houses just outside the grounds of the century-old Hamilton Golf and Country Club and, like a Tiger-Cats home game, locals sold space on their driveways for parking at $40 a vehicle. If Golf Canada wanted to create the sense of a summer golf festival in its new June slot on the PGA Tour, well, it surely accomplished that on the second day of the tournament. Plus, there was beautiful golf.
You could pound the boards on the “rink” of the 13th tee in appreciation, enjoy a natural amphitheatre feel on the par-3 sixth or marvel at the tough shots off downhill lies approaching the 18th hole. The stars of the PGA gratefully inhaled the atmosphere and devoured Harry Colt’s golf course, going low and then a bit lower. Ben Silverman of Thornhill looked to have demolished the course record with a sparkling 9-under-par 61, but 2013 Canadian Open champion Brandt Snedeker did him one shot better with a record round of 60. “We could just ignore (Snedeker’s) and say mine was the greatest Canadian Open round ever,” suggested Silverman. “Look, if I shot 9-under in Texas like this, I wouldn’t get the same kind of reception. I have family and friends here.”Snedeker played alongside marquee tour players Justin Thomas and Brooks Koepka, compensating for the fact the two long bombers outdrove him on most every hole by outputting them on every green.“I did a good job staying in my lane today,” said Snedeker. “Playing smart golf. Make a lot of putts like I did and you get hot like this.
It’s a lot of fun.”Silverman and Snedeker weren’t the only ones to take advantage of the brilliant conditions on a day where temperatures soared above 27C. South Carolina’s Scott Brown shot 63 to share the second-round lead at 12-under with popular Matt Kuchar, who also shot 63.Then came more Canadians. Nick Taylor had another excellent day, shooting 65 to put himself one shot off the lead going into Saturday’s third round. Mackenzie Hughes and Adam Hadwin both shot 66, putting them at minus-9, well within striking distance. Hughes, from nearby Dundas, even had fans carrying giant pictures of his face around the golf course.“I can thank my wife for that one,” he said. “She ordered those.
No one to blame but my other half. It’s all good. It’s all just part of this whole business of playing 10 minutes from home.“It’s fun. Just trying to embrace it all.”If there was a disappointment, it was Corey Conners of Listowel, Ont. Missing the cut. After winning the Valero Texas Open earlier this year Conners was reckoned to have a serious shot in Hamilton, but his putter, always his Achilles heel, again wouldn’t co-operate on the slick Poa annua greens. The other big names lured to the Canadian Open this year, Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy, both survived the cut.
Johnson and his buddy Koepka both sit eight shots back, while McIlroy put together rounds of 67 and 66 on the first two days and sits five back of Brown and Kuchar. So a lot of scenarios are in play for the weekend, with more splendid weather in the offing. The red numbers being put up by so many players might suggest the course, short by PGA standards at 6,966 yards, is just too easy when the weather is this accomodating.Snedeker’s new course record may not even last until Monday.“I realize these days don’t happen very often on tour,” he cautioned. “More often than not you’re getting beat up.”After moving to June from an awkward July date after the British Open, tournament organizers are hoping to regain some lost lustre for this tournament beginning with this year.“I hold this tournament up a little bit more, just because of what it means to me being a past champion,” said Snedeker. “The people up here are just so nice and I feel I’m part Canadian. They treat me like one.”If you were to bet on one of the actual Canadians going into the weekend, it would have to be Hughes because of his familiarity with the terrain.“When I was a teenager, 15 or 16, I first came out here and I met my first golf coach, Scott Cowx,” said Hughes.
“I would play on the weekends here every now and then — I want to say 30, 40 or 50 times. So I’ve played a fair number of rounds here and feel quite comfortable.“You know you’re playing with a bit of extra pressure, but if you can kind of embrace that and use it as a positive then it can kind of work in your favour. I felt like everyone is kind of pulling me along, and that’s been nice to have.”So far, so good for Canadian golf. And Canada’s new-look national tournament.Damien Cox is a former Star sports reporter who is a current freelance contributing columnist based in Toronto.
